Marie Avery Moses mmoses@kghllaw.com Marie Avery Moses has been practicing family law exclusively since 1997. During her career, Marie has developed a reputation for providing thoughtful, compassionate, and sensible representation to clients facing complex and compelling family law problems. Marie enjoys working closely with clients to prepare and present cases for resolution through mediation or litigation.

In 2010 Marie was named one of the top 50 attorneys in Colorado by Super Lawyers. She is also listed in the Best Lawyers in America. Marie is a Fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and has received an A-V rating from Martindale Hubbell. Prior to beginning her family law practice, Marie spent two years as a law clerk for the Honorable Edwin G. Ruland of the Colorado Court of Appeals. As a result of her experience on the Court of Appeals, Marie has developed an expertise in handling appeals in domestic relations cases, obtaining favorable results for clients as counsel for both appellants and appellees. Marie successfully argued three published cases, In re Marriage of Ohr, 97 P.3d 354 (Colo. App. 2004), In re Marriage of Moore, 107 P.3d 1150 (Colo. App. 2005), and In re Marriage of Schelp, 228 P.3d 151 (Colo. 2010). Marie lectures on appellate procedures for the Colorado Bar Association and has published "An Appellate Primer for Family Law Practitioners" in The Colorado Lawyer. Marie is a member of the Amicus Committee of the Colorado Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and has contributed to the most recent brief submitted to the Colorado Supreme Court by that organization on the issue of parental constitutional rights. Marie is presently serving as the Chair of the Family Law Section of the Colorado Bar Association, having been elected to this position by attorneys throughout the State of Colorado. Marie continues to serve as the Co-Chair of the Colorado Bar Association's Family Law Section Legislative Committee where she has worked with members of the Colorado legislature to formulate and draft legislation pertaining to parenting time, child support, temporary support, paternity, domestic violence and grandparent and third-party visitation issues. Marie regularly testifies before Colorado House and Senate Committees regarding all areas of domestic relations. She served as the Co-Editor for The Colorado Lawyer's Family Law column from 2002 to 2006, and chair of the Colorado Bar Association's 2009 Family Law Institute. Marie enjoys running with her relay team, reading fiction, playing softball and trying to keep some semblance of order in her household which consists of her husband, David, their twins, Kenny & Helen, and the family pets.

Marie has represented clients in dissolution of marriage cases involving: (1) high conflict custody disputes, including circumstances of substance abuse, physical abuse, parental alienation and mental illness; (2) restrictions on parental rights; (3) complex asset valuation issues including business valuations, trust interests, family partnerships, and stock options; (4) valuing and tracing separate property interests; (5) tracing wasted marital assets; (6) establishing income of self-employed spouses for support purposes; (7) post-decree litigation to set aside Separation Agreements or Permanent Orders; (8) post-decree modifications of support and allocation of parental rights and responsibilities; (9) contempt proceedings; and (10) establishment of trusts for the benefit of children.

Additionally, Marie represents clients in non-traditional child custody disputes including cases involving: (1) psychological parents; (2) grandparent requests for parenting time; (3) paternity disputes involving more than one presumed father; and (4) disputes involving same-sex parents.

What do you like best about your job?
So many of my clients start out in a place of anxiety, distress and conflict. Through the course of their cases, I witness them move to a place of acceptance, empowerment and peace. It is satisfying to help my clients achieve a feeling of wellbeing.

What is your favorite thing about living in Denver, Colorado?
I am enormously lucky to have a very supportive network of family, friends and colleagues here in Colorado.

Name one co-worker who you would not want to face in a trial, and explain why.
I joined this firm so that I wouldn’t have to face any of them in court. But, if I had to name only one, it would be Jerremy Ramp. Everyone really likes him.

Name the last great book you read.
The History of Love, by Nicole Krauss. The book captures the sadness of lost love like none other.

Favorite ski run?
Bushwacker at Telluride if I’m skiing by myself. If I’m skiing with our children, I love any run at Sunlight because Kenny & Helen have so much fun tearing down those empty, easy runs.

What was your proudest moment as a lawyer?
A former client left a message just to let me know that she realized that it had been exactly two years since she had first come to my office. She wanted to let me know how happy she was in her new life and how much she appreciated my help in getting her to that place.
